Corona History

Corona, originally named South Riverside after the successful citrus community of Riverside, voted in 1896 to change the city's name and incorporate. Agriculture has always been Corona's main revenue source. In the early 1900's, the demand for lemons had grown and the town pulled together to form the first Lemon Exchange By-Products company in the U.S., giving town its nickname as the "Lemon Capital of the World."

Corona, "The Circle City," founded in 1886 by Robert Taylor and members of the south Riverside Land and Water Company, who along with engineer, H. Clay Kellogg, built the Corona around the central point, Grand Blvd. The men lined the street with pepper trees and developed the city. Early homes and businesses were located around the circle with citrus groves to the south. Industrial and fruit packing plants were built to the north near the railroad tracks. By 1954, the population reached 11,000. The largest employer was Exchange Lemon Products Co. which helped to establish Corona in the citrus industry, and gain its new nickname "Lemon Capital of the World."

The "91" freeway was built through Corona in 1962, the downtown area revitalized and new buildings were added. The Citrus groves in south Corona were replaced by tracts of new homes. By Corona's centennial in 1986, the population had reached 44,895.

Corona Housing

Corona is made up of single family homes, villas, condominiums, townhouses. Corona offers affordable housing and a high average for family income. The average cost of a new house in Corona is $274,944 and the average cost of an existing house is $206,085. Corona has no utility user tax. In 1987, the City of Corona enacted a comprehensive property maintenance ordinance which sets minimum standards for residential and business properties maintenance to prevent unsafe and unsightly conditions. This helps keep the neighborhoods clean and property values stable. More than 10,500 houses were built in Corona during the 1990s. By the end of 2000, housing development had slowed considerably.
